Turn Used Furniture Into ₹1 Lakh Per Month Side Hustle

Your Guide to Profitable Furniture Flipping in India

Hello Everyone,

Welcome to a big week at Moneymint! We've got 1,000 new members. Let's say hi to them!

Now, let's dive into this edition of our newsletter, where I'll share an exclusive money-making opportunity. Ready?

I found this interesting story on reddit and I thought why not replicate this in India? I will be building this business for you live on Moneymint YouTube channel, so if you want to see this live, please subscribe to our channel.

First, let's discuss what the original story is, then I will share the details on how you can replicate this idea in India.

This person with username "Oregonwholesale" has shared his story on reddit. He makes $10,000 per month from his side hustle.

What he does is simple: he buys old couches from people who are moving away or selling their furniture for some reason and then sells them online for a profit. Also, he does this in his part time. And mind you, its not a simple task, as you need to talk to a few people daily, then visit them in order to check the couches they are selling, as couches need to be in good condition in order for him to flip them.

Oregonwholesale find these deals on Craigslist or Facebook marketplace and quickly decides what to buy and then resell online for a profit.

He says 2 key things that help him sell at a higher price:

  • Good quality photos

  • Free delivery

Now he owns a pickup truck and that’s why he is able do this easily and earn a good amount of money. Also, he runs a carpet cleaning business but makes more money selling couches as they are in high demand.

Let’s talk some numbers:

Oregonwholesale sell 4-5 couches a week at $500 profits or sometime even more. He is working solo, and he ask his customers to help him load or unload couches from his truck. He mentions that his girlfriend sometimes helps him, but that happens rarely.

Various people in comments section share how this idea actually works:

I did this before. It works with a huge margin but it can never scale unless you expand. That's where the profit started eroding.

Reply from Oregonwholesale…

Yeah I feel like I have capped myself at 3500 a week. I can't go any higher than that.

So it’s not the most scalable business as it’s an offline business, but he said that people can easily make like $10,000 monthly profit if you live in metro cities and execute this plan really well.

Also, to support the above story more and more people are already doing this: How One Side Hustler Turned $65 into $35,000 in 15 Months

Brief of the story:

When school teacher Claire McCann sold a used $65 table for $300, she discovered a profitable new side hustle. She realized the potential of furniture flipping and started honing her skills. Just 15 months later, Claire has earned over $35,000 in profits from furniture flipping using Facebook Marketplace and other digital platforms.

How you can replicate this in India: ₹1 Lakh monthly from used furniture?

Before you say its not possible in India, hear me out. A lot of offline players are already doing this for past many years, so if you utilize the online + offline model, I am sure you can earn a good amount of profit.

Before moving forward with the idea, let me share how offline players are making good amount of money doing this. First big player in this space in Noida is “Vipul Furniture

To give you an idea of their space, they lease a 3 floor building in Noida sector 65, just to sell used furniture. You can view this video to see how much inventory they hold and what’s their store look like:

And its not like they are the only player in this space, they are many others:

Now its clear that it’s a big business, let’s move onto how you can replicate this on a smaller scale to make some side income. Quick disclaimer, to build businesses like above, you need patience, hard work and hustle day in and day out for almost 10 year, nothing is built overnight. What I am showing here is just a very low-key version where you can earn 20,000 to 40,000 per month.

You can easily buy used furniture from platforms such as Facebook marketplace, Quikr, OLX, etc. But for furniture flipping I would suggest you focus on Facebook marketplace or Facebook groups. Because on OLX or Quikr you will mostly find furniture traders, resellers, etc and we want to buy second-hand furniture directly from customers.

Best place to buy used furniture are Facebook groups.

Why Facebook groups?

Because you can directly connect with the customer who is selling their used furniture. You need to be an active participant of the group in order to get a good deal as soon as the product is shared.

You need to comment, negotiate and pickup the furniture. Sometime it will work out sometime it won’t as there are many buyers in the market.

But all in all, it’s worth the effort.

Some examples of the furniture selling in these groups:

See how good products get so much engagement, 59 comments and 7 likes.

Good deals will always have a lot of engagement and you need to figure out how much you can sell the product for in order to make a profit. Don’t buy the deal you think is good, you need to always figure out how much you can sell the product for, then only you will be able to make profit and earn decent money from this side-hustle.

You have figured out how to source the second-hand furniture, now how will you sell these?

You can’t sell on Facebook again, as you are buying from it. This is where I will disclose a great way to sell used furniture online.

You can create a Facebook and Instagram page, take good quality photos of the furniture you are selling, offer free home delivery and create an engaging ad for your customers. So, you need to run Facebook ads in order to sell your product.

There are 33,000 ads related to furniture, and clearly its working. That’s why people are using Facebook ads to sell almost anything online.

You can easily create above ads for your product, place the product in a good corner of your house and start taking high quality photos & videos. It may sound complicated but its not, you just have to try different things with your ads, photos, products, etc and in few months you will start making money.

Now let’s calculate how much profit you can make selling used furniture online:

Used Furniture Cost: 1 Queen size bed: ₹5,000 to ₹8,000
Marketing Cost (Ads): ₹2,000
Delivery Cost: ₹1,000

Now the above figures will change according to your product, and how well you setup the Facebook/Instagram ads.

Total Cost: ₹9,000 to ₹10,000

You can easily sell a good quality second-hand bed for ₹14,000 to ₹16,000.

Total Profit: ₹4,000

Now, imagine if you can sell one piece of furniture per day then you can easily make ₹1,20,000 per month. Even if you have a profit of ₹2,000 per day, you can easily make ₹60,000 per month.

Initial Capital required to start this business: ₹20,000 to ₹30,000.

Note: The figures mentioned above are hypothetical and based on my research. There is no guarantee that you will achieve these specific outcomes. Therefore, it is crucial to conduct your own comprehensive research before embarking on any new venture.

When you start out, don’t start with a big product like a bed or a sofa set, as delivery of such items can be a hassle. Start with small items such as tables, chairs, décor items, etc. which you can ship yourself or using services like porter.

The idea is to sell good quality furniture to customers and ask for testimonials in order to showcase your store. As using testimonials in your ads can increase your sales 2x or 3x.

Find it, buy it, advertise it, sell it, pocket the profits, and then do it all over again. This isn't just a process; it's the secret formula for furniture flipping in India.

That’s all for today. Did I miss anything?
