Chandrayaan-1 Sheds Light on Moon Water Formation
Earth's Electrons May Create Moon Water...What??
Good Afternoon ☕
A groundbreaking study led by researchers from the University of Hawai'i (UH) at Manoa has discovered that Earth's own high-energy electrons may be contributing to the formation of water on the Moon. The research utilized data collected by India's Chandrayaan-1 mission, which was launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in October 2008 and operated until August 2009.
Chandrayaan-1 data shows Earth's electrons are forming water on Moon
The Chandrayaan-1 mission had a crucial role in the earlier discovery of water molecules on the Moon, thanks to its Moon Mineralogy Mapper, an imaging spectrometer. Building on that data, the researchers were particularly interested in the role of Earth's magnetotail—a region in space that shields the Moon from the solar wind. Typically, solar wind, composed of high-energy particles like protons, is considered a primary source of water formation on the Moon.
Shuai Li, an assistant researcher at the UH Manoa School of Ocean, explained that they examined how water formation changes when the Moon is within Earth's magnetotail. Interestingly, they found that water formation rates were nearly the same whether the Moon was inside or outside the magnetotail. This suggests the possibility of additional processes or new sources of water, possibly tied to high-energy electrons from Earth, contributing to water formation.
Understanding the presence and distribution of water on the Moon is crucial for multiple reasons. It not only adds to our comprehension of the Moon's formation and evolution but is also vital for planning future human exploration missions. This research adds a new layer of complexity to our understanding of water formation on the Moon and indicates that Earth and the Moon have a more interconnected relationship than previously understood.
Important Points:
1. Team Involved: Researchers from the University of Hawai'i (UH) at Manoa led the study, which was published in the journal Nature Astronomy.
2. Data Source: The study used data from Chandrayaan-1, an ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) mission launched in October 2008 that operated until August 2009.
3. Electron Contribution: High-energy electrons from Earth's plasma sheet have been found to contribute to weathering processes on the Moon, aiding in water formation.
4. Significance of Water: Understanding the concentrations and distribution of water on the Moon is vital for both comprehending its evolution and planning future human exploration.
5. Chandrayaan-1's Role: The mission played a crucial role in discovering water molecules on the Moon through its Moon Mineralogy Mapper instrument.
6. Alternate Water Formation: While solar wind is a known source for water formation on the Moon, this study highlights that water formation continues even when the Moon is in Earth's magnetotail, shielded from solar wind.
7. Earth's Magnetotail: The study focused on changes in water formation as the Moon passed through Earth's magnetotail, an area that shields the Moon from solar wind but not light photons.
8. Unanticipated Findings: Researcher Shuai Li expressed surprise that water formation in Earth's magnetotail was almost identical to when the Moon was outside it, pointing to other formation processes or new water sources.
9. Earth-Moon Connection: The study indicates that Earth and the Moon are connected in previously unrecognized ways, adding to the team's prior research on rusty lunar poles.

1. Nipah has around 70% mortality rate, Covid had 3%: ICMR
The Director-General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Dr. Rajeev Bahl, stated that the Nipah virus has a significantly higher mortality rate (around 60%) compared to Covid-19 (nearly 3%) in India. Monoclonal antibody treatment, available for only 10 patients in the country, has shown promise but has only completed phase 1 safety trials. Current Nipah cases in Kerala are linked to a single index patient, and efforts to contain the outbreak are ongoing. An advanced team from the National Institute of Virology has been dispatched to Kerala for on-site testing. Neighboring Karnataka has issued a travel advisory due to the outbreak.
2. PM Modi retains ‘world’s most popular global leader' position
Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains the world's most popular leader with a 76% approval rating, according to a survey by US-based consultancy Morning Consult. The second-best approval rating is Switzerland President Alain Berset at 64%. Union Home Minister Amit Shah attributes Modi's popularity to his foreign policy success and efforts in poverty alleviation. The high approval comes after India successfully hosted the G20 Summit in Delhi, focusing on the voice of the Global South and developing nations. The summit concluded with the New Delhi Declaration and the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent G20 member.

5. India-Canada FTA talks paused due to political reasons
Negotiations between India and Canada on a free trade agreement (FTA) have been paused due to unresolved "political issues," according to a senior government official. Although the Khalistan issue was not explicitly cited, it has previously created tensions between the two countries. PM Narendra Modi has expressed concerns to Canadian PM Justin Trudeau about anti-India activities in Canada. Talks will resume once these political concerns are resolved. Negotiations had previously focused on areas like textiles, leather, dairy, and agricultural products. Bilateral trade between the countries increased to $8.16 billion in 2022-23, up from $7 billion in 2021-22.
